Colin has enjoyed a broad-based career which includes senior operational and consultancy roles with major public and private organizations in the UK and New Zealand.  As a graduate engineer, he joined Rolls-Royce and subsequently moved into international business development roles.  After a period working in technology transfer, Colin joined BAe Systems with the task of seeking out non-traditional business opportunities. 

Through completing an MBA with the OU, he developed an enduring interest in creativity and innovation  processes. His TRIZ journey started in 1999 when attending a presentation by Oxford Creativity whilst working as Principal Consultant for the engineering services company INBIS (now part of Assystem). Whilst there, his work focussed on new product development, engineering and technology management processes. 

For the past 25 years Colin has operated at the intersection of research, science and business and is passionate about creating impact from investments in research and technology. For ten of those years, Colin worked in New Zealand overseeing Government investments in the science sector. Most recently he worked there as Principal Policy Advisor within the Science Leadership Team in the Ministry for Business, Innovation and Employment.

Before Oxford Creativity...

I have been fortunate enough to make a career, in both the private and public sector, out of following and assisting individuals and organisations that are deeply involved in advanced technology. Especially advanced technology's application at the point where science, research and business meet.

What are you most proud of?

My formal journey working directly with Oxford Creativity is still short, however through years of exposure I've come to understand the universality of key TRIZ thinking tools.

What does your Oxford Creativity work involve?

I'm involved in training and problem solving workshops and have an underlying interest in the application of TRIZ principles in the broadest of settings beyond its traditional technical domain.

Please reflect on your role

There is enormous satisfaction in opening up people's minds to realise their own creative potential.

Home and Hobbies

The Great Outdoors (trekking, climbing and to a lesser degree cycling), travel, photography.

Likes

Traditional English pubs, a good book by an open fire.

Dislikes

Beetroot, and goats cheese - I can't fathom the attraction of either!
