Stimulate & develop your inner genius with Oxford TRIZ
Genius solutions mobilise available resources. Many people survived fires and accidents, particularly in mines, with the clever hood shown in the cartoon above, which located and made available lifesaving cool air. Inventor Garrett Augustus Morgan (known as the ‘Black Edison’) invented the ‘smoke hood’ in 1912. Throughout the ages the simplest and most brilliant inventions, such as the Da Vinci bridge with its self-supporting arches, utilise what is already there to provide what is needed.
The 6 TRIZ TRIMMING Rules show how to achieve this genius thinking consistently and instinctively, by systematically seeking the right resources. Beyond delivering brilliant solutions, TRIMMING helps us save money sustainably. As the originator's of Oxford TRIZ™, our most spectacular successes come from guiding teams to recognise the resources which will solve their urgent problems. National Highways achieved dramatic cost savings when their TRIZ team in Bristol invented a £50,000 solution which needed only half a percent of their £10 million budget. They solved the problem of how to track all ROAD CONES on major roads - to ensure that cones are only in place when needed to minimise delays.
The team involved were on their first day of Oxford TRIZ (training or problem solving), and working together to ‘Save the Titanic’ with a simple exercise. They first saved the ship and everyone on board and then applied the same logical simple steps to their problem and saved £9,950,000 in less than an hour.
They followed this 3-step problem solving process:
Step 1 – Identify what is needed, especially the two or three essential Functions the solution must provide (Titanic = float + survive cold + be found) Step 2– Map available Resources Step 3 – Mobilise resources to create systems which deliver essential functions. (TRIMMING RULE 4)
The TRIZ TRIMMING Rules always improve systems and deliver cost savings. They guide us to think like a genius and achieve consistent clever success. All simple six TRIMMING rules guide us to identify and mobilise the available relevant resources, using what is already there to give us what we need.
