Aside from the obvious answer - that it works; it was when we worked on next generation submarines with BAE teams in Barrow that we adopted the pirate theme. It proved very popular with their engineers and submariners who like pirates have to be clever, resourceful and know how to problem-solve fast.
Our many Oxford TRIZ pirate cartoons are commissioned to communicate complex issues ‘at a glance’ and are also invaluable when working with international teams. Everyone seems fond of pirates too. Last week I went to a pirate wedding – full of TRIZ people all looking like TV’s Captain Pugwash’s crew (still popular with my grandchildren). It taught me as a five year old the subversive message that the cabin boy’s clever solutions would save the day, overcoming the incompetent management of the very dim Captain Pugwash
Having a lovely time at a pirate wedding!
Much of our problem solving is helping teams with complicated and multi-faceted problems so they efficiently locate the most cost-effective and sustainable answers using the best TRIZ tools. We have supplemented these with powerful narrative techniques from our own TRIZ Expert and Narrative Ecologist Ron Donaldson. Ron runs many amazing workshops, including one on knowledge sharing for experienced managers and engineers to brief colleagues when retiring or moving roles and record their ’knowledge footprint’. Ron also createdStorytelling for Engineers - an online course designed to help teams harness the power of story in order to communicate more clearly, and write persuasive arguments and engaging presentations.
Stories have been used for thousands of years to share knowledge, build communities and inspire innovation and action. This virtual course has been designed to teach you to use storytelling to:
Improve communications to make them more compelling, engaging and memorable
Enhance your ability to present your case and persuade others to pay attention
Improve your written and speaking communication skills to write better reports and give better presentations
